Why Your Detailed Logo Fails in Chenille — and the Silhouette That Doesn’t

The most common chenille disappointment is a beautiful crest reduced to fuzz. It is predictable, physical and avoidable.

What the loop does

Each tuft of pile is a loop of yarn with real width and height — your image is being drawn with a fat, soft crayon.

Anything narrower than the loop simply disappears into it.

What survives

Bold letterforms, strong silhouettes, blocks of colour, felt outlines doing the linework.

That is not a limitation to apologise for — it is the look the whole varsity tradition is built on.

How simplification works

Find the shape recognised from the bleachers: the head, the stance, the outline.

Rebuild it in colour-blocked pile, let felt edges draw the lines, and approve the simplified art before production.

When to mix techniques

A combination patch puts chenille in the body and embroidery in the fine work — the eye, the small text, the whiskers.

And when a crest is truly all detail, honest advice is embroidery alone — before the money is spent, not after.
